What to Expect at Your First Jiu-Jitsu Class in Towson

Nervous about your first jiu-jitsu class in Towson? Here's what to wear, what happens on the mat, and how to start with a free class plus 10 days at Kanjizai.

What to Expect at Your First Jiu-Jitsu Class in Towson

Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can feel like a big step. Maybe you've watched a few videos, maybe your kid has been asking to try it, or maybe you just want a workout that's more interesting than a treadmill. Whatever brought you here, a little nervousness is normal. Almost everyone on our mats felt it on day one.

This guide covers what your first jiu-jitsu class at Kanjizai Academy of Jiu-Jitsu in Towson actually looks like, so you can walk in knowing what's coming.

You Don't Need to Be "In Shape" First

This is the most common thing we hear: "I'll start once I get in better shape." You don't need to. Jiu-jitsu is how a lot of people get in shape. Classes for beginners are built around learning, not around testing how tough you are.

You also don't need any experience. You don't need to know how to fall, grapple, or wrestle. Teaching that is our job. Kids and adults both start from zero, and there's no expectation that you'll know anything when you walk through the door.

What to Wear and Bring

Keep it simple for your first visit:

  • Comfortable athletic clothes. A fitted t-shirt or rash guard and athletic shorts or pants without zippers, pockets, or buttons work well.
  • No jewelry. Rings, earrings, and watches can catch on clothing or scratch a partner. Leave them at home or in your bag.
  • Water bottle. You'll want it.
  • Sandals or slip-on shoes. We keep shoes off the mat to keep it clean, so something easy to slip on and off between the mat and the restroom helps.
  • Trimmed nails and clean clothes. Jiu-jitsu is a close-contact sport, and your training partners will thank you.

If you have questions about uniforms or gear for after your first class, just ask when you arrive. Don't buy anything before you've tried it.

Getting Here

We're at 5710 Bellona Ave, 2nd Floor, in Towson. Give yourself a few extra minutes the first time so you can find us, take your shoes off, and say hello without rushing. Arriving a little early also gives you time to meet the instructor and mention any injuries or concerns before class starts.

What Happens During Class

Every class is a little different, but a beginner's first session usually follows a familiar rhythm.

A Warm-Up

Class typically opens with movement that gets your body ready: light cardio, stretching, and basic jiu-jitsu movements like shrimping (a hip escape you'll use constantly) and safe ways to fall. These aren't meant to wear you out. They're the building blocks of everything else.

Learning a Technique

Next, the instructor demonstrates a technique, often several times and from different angles. You'll then pair up with a partner and practice it slowly. One person does the move, the other cooperates, and then you switch.

This is where Gracie Jiu-Jitsu shines for beginners. It's built on leverage and timing rather than strength, so a smaller person can learn to control a bigger one. A lot of what you learn early on is self-defense: how to stay safe on the ground, how to escape a bad position, and how to get back to your feet.

Repetition and Questions

You'll drill the technique a number of times. It's completely fine to get it wrong, slow down, or ask the instructor to show you again. Nobody expects you to get it right the first time. Getting it a little better each time is the goal.

Is It Safe?

Safety is a big reason people hesitate, and it's a fair question. In a well-run class, beginners work at a controlled pace with cooperative partners. You'll learn early how to "tap," which means tapping your partner or the mat to signal you want to stop. When someone taps, their partner lets go right away. It's the most important rule on the mat.

Tell your instructor about any injuries or health concerns before class. Go at your own pace, take water breaks when you need them, and don't be afraid to sit out a drill if something doesn't feel right.

Classes for Kids and Adults

Kanjizai offers Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and Traditional Japanese Jujutsu for both kids and adults. Parents often tell us they came in for their child and ended up wanting to train themselves. Kids build confidence, focus, and respect, and adults get a full-body workout, real self-defense skills, and a stress reliever that keeps their mind busy in the best way.

If you're signing up a child, it helps to talk with them beforehand about what to expect: they'll learn new moves, work with a partner, and listen to the instructor. Most kids are nervous for the first five minutes and having fun after that.

How You'll Feel Afterward

Expect to be a little sore the next day, especially in your core, hips, and grip. That's normal and fades as your body adjusts. Many people are surprised by how mentally engaging jiu-jitsu is. You aren't counting reps. You're solving problems with a partner, so the time goes by fast.

Most importantly, you'll probably leave with a sense of "I can do this." That feeling is what keeps people coming back.

A Few Tips From the Mat

  • Be patient with yourself. Jiu-jitsu is a long-term skill. Everyone was a beginner once, including your instructor.
  • Ask questions. The people training next to you were in your shoes not long ago and are usually happy to help.
  • Focus on showing up. Consistency matters more than talent. A couple of classes a week adds up fast.
  • Leave your ego at the door. You'll tap a lot at first. That's how you learn.
