Dakenjutsu is typically categorized by it's emphasis on strong, heavy striking, but as in all traditional martial arts, there are always much deeper layers of understanding to uncover. Shinden Fudo Ryu Dakenjutsu is uniquely tied to nature and earth. It's techniques have a solid, grounded feel when performed, and contain not only heavy, damaging strikes, but techniques which pull an opponent to the ground, throws and joint-locks which drive the opponent down, and strikes springing up from the ground. Heavy, close-fisted blows to the ribs, stomach, head, and face are common. These rattle and slow opponents, allowing various methods of takedowns to then be applied.
Many of the striking techniques in the Genbukan Taijutsu curriculum originate in the techniques of Dakenjutsu (or "Daken-Taijutsu"). If a student develops proficiency in Kosshijutsu, Koppojutsu, and Dakenjutsu then he is truly an unarmed specialist. This is the meaning of "Bugei" in "Genbukan World Ninpo Bugei" - A system comprised of many traditional styles. In this way, we are mixed martial artists of the combat arts. Distinguishing each system allows us to preserve the history and teachings of each, while discovering the ageless wisdom within them all. Shinden Fudo Ryu Tanemura-Ha and Shinden Tatara Ryu are the Dakenjutsu schools offered.
